Self Defense Training - Part Four:

Learning to use Unarmed Combat to deal with a Hostile Situation

A section on unarmed combat is an integral part of any self defense or martial arts instruction course. We concentrated on teaching you the use of concealed weapons first because we wished to give you the maximum effectiveness in a minimum of time. The unarmed combat moves that you will learn now are from several martial arts and have been included in this self defense instruction course for times when you have to defend yourself without a weapon. Strike 2) Another 'grip release' technique - The Back-Kick to the Shin..

This is another useful move if someone grabs you from behind, pinning your arms to your sides..

Simply raise your foot to shin height, as shown in the pictures below, and kick BACKWARDS at the attackers shin with your HEEL. This kick causes considerable pain as it attacks a nerve center. It will certainly cause the attacker to loosen his grip. Look at the pictures below...

If you are not confident of one kick working, use four or five kicks, one after the other, as quickly, and with as much force as you can. Once your arms are slightly free, you can reach back and grab at and twist the attacker's private parts, then duck under his arms and choose to fight or run, whichever opportunity presents itself.

It is best not to BE grabbed from behind in the first place. However, if you have been sensible and have your Yawara stick in your hand, this Back kick to the shin can be followed up by twisting in your attacker's grip and hitting him in the groin with your Yawara stick.

Practice this 'back-kick' against a bag hung to the right height, kicking it as hard as you can.

Practice this technique a few times at least twice a week.
