Weight Loss: Myths and Truth

This article will try to throw light on some popular myths about weight loss and will dispel them with simple facts..
Myth 1: Skipping meals is a good way to lose weight..
On the contrary, skipping meals can be extremely dangerous - as much to your health as to your diet. Your body needs a certain amount of nutrients and calories each day to survive and if you deprive it of these nutrients you will feel tired, listless, depressed, and will also probably become overpoweringly hungry towards evening - this will create a tendency to gorge yourself on food in the evenings.
Studies have shown that people who go in for an extreme diets tend to make up any lost weight quickly the moment they stop the diet because the body thinks that it is in a 'starvation zone' and so struggles to store as much food as possible (as fat) as soon as supplies of food become available.
Studies have also shown that people who eat a nutritious breakfast tend to be slimmer than those who skip breakfast entirely. The best plan is to aim at reduction of 1/2 to 2 pounds a week, and obtain it by eating several small, nutritious meals during the day and by doing some regular exercise.
Myth 2: Certain foods like celery and grape-fruit can burn fat.
What burns fat is exercise, period.
10-15 minutes of physical exercise everyday will help you burn out fat. This coupled with a reduction in your intake of calories will help you lose weight. There IS a relatively easy way to lose weight - and that way is, simply.. don't eat too much and exercise enough to keep you healthy.
Doing this IS easy - just as soon as you make it a part of your everyday life. Instead of going in for temporary solutions make exercise and healthy eating one of the aspects of your life and you will find that you will not only lose weight but also become extremely fit and healthy as well.
Myth 3: High protein, no carbohydrate diets are a healthy way to lose weight..
On the contrary, this kind diet places an immense strain on your body, especially on the kidneys. Many high protein diets allow foods rich in fat, such as cheese and yogurt, which increase a person's risk of heart disease and related ailments.
High protein diets are not a healthy way to lose weight. They not only over-work the kidneys but also cause dehydration, headaches, a feeling of listlessness and even bad breath. If undertaken for an extensive period of time they can have dangerous and unpleasant side effects like gout (swelling of the joints) and even kidney stones. If you have diabetes you must NEVER undertake such a diet.
A far simpler and more healthful way to lose weight is to take in less calories in a nutritious, well balanced diet that includes carbohydrates, proteins and a small amount of fat. I assure you that you can still lose weight with a nutritious diet and some exercise without any unpleasant side effects. You will also be far more healthy, feel better and have a greater zest for living. A nutritious diet and a good amount of exercise is THE way to a healthier, slimmer and happier you.
